The £1,000 line that decides everything

If your gross trading income from side hustles stays at £1,000 or less in a tax year, the trading allowance covers it. You do not register for Self Assessment for that income. Cross the line and you tell HMRC by 5 October after the tax year ends.

A basic-rate employee who clears £5,000 of side-hustle profit, claims the £1,000 allowance, and pays 20% on the rest keeps about £4,200. A higher-rate employee keeps about £3,400. That is the honest poster, not a screenshot of someone else’s dashboard.
